2022 VC4A Venture Showcase Africa – Women founder edition

April 22, 2022 by Divine A. Leave a Comment

Are you operating in Africa, generating revenue, and looking to raise between $250K and $10M? This is the opportunity you’ve been looking for! See how to apply for the 2022VC4A Venture Showcase Africa.

2022 VC4A Venture Showcase Africa – Women founder edition

VC4A is looking for up to 16 women founders leading innovative, high-growth scale-ups to showcase to the global network of Africa-focused investors.

According to the Africa: The Big Deal report, in 2021 93% of the funding in Africa went to startups led by male CEOs. Looking at the makeup of founding teams, over 99% of the funding in 2021 was raised by a single male founder, or a founding team with at least one male co-founder.

Based on this knowledge and as a community member dedicated to supporting the startup ecosystem, VC4A now opens a call dedicated to women-led startups from across the African continent. If you are leading a fast growing startup with clear impact potential and you are in the process of scaling up your activities in the region, then apply.

As part of the program, companies get visibility within a curated investor network and are interviewed by leading VC funds as part of the vetting process. The finalists receive mentorship and technical advice directly from the angel investors, VC fund managers and Corporates that participate in the program. The Venture Showcase is an effective way to get visibility for your fundraising campaign and to connect with prospective investors. Last but not least, this is a great opportunity to share and learn from your peers and build long-lasting relationships with them.

Eligibility Criteria

  • You have a very strong management team of at least 3 people including one (or more) woman founder;
  • Your company is for-profit and registered as an independent legal entity;
  • You have a product or service available on the market and generate revenue;
  • Your product or service is clearly innovative and/or your business model is new, disruptive and designed for scale;

Wellcome Mental Health Data Prize 2022 for early career Researchers

April 22, 2022 by Divine A. Leave a Comment

Have you heard of the Wellcome Mental Health Data Prize 2022 for early career Researchers?

Wellcome Mental Health Data Prize 2022 for early career Researchers

The Wellcome Data Prize in mental health supports collaborative approaches to research into anxiety and depression in young people. Teams in the UK and South Africa will explore existing data to find new insights and build digital tools that enable future research.

The Prize aims to generate tangible and scalable outputs that support the mental health research community. The overarching question for the Data Prize is:

“What are the ‘active ingredients’ that make a difference in preventing, treating, and managing anxiety and depression in young people? What works, for whom, in what contexts, and why?”

 Requirements

A key aim of this prize is to build a multidisciplinary mental health data community by bringing together people with mental health research backgrounds and data expertise.  By mental health science we mean any discipline that uses evidence in rigorous and transparent ways, whether based on observation or experimentation. This could include:

  • psychiatry
  • psychology
  • neuroscience
  • disciplines within the humanities, social sciences and computer sciences, among others.

Lead applicants:

  • must be based in the UK or South Africa.
  • may be at any career stage but must have a permanent, open-ended or long-term rolling contract, or the guarantee of one for the full duration of the award.

  • Sustainability phase: £500,000 will be allocated across 3 winning teams

Duration of funding:

6-18 months

Prize structure

There are three phases to the prize, with only a subset of teams from each phase progressing to the next:

1. Discovery Phase (10 teams)

  • Teams will produce an analysis of existing data to answer a research question.
  • Teams will be supported with data acquisition, and refining use cases (further examination of how, why and where the digital tool they develop could be used) as well as lived experience involvement approaches.

2. Prototyping Phase (5 teams)

  • Teams will create a prototype of a digital tool, and they will also refine and disseminate their research from the discovery phase.
  • Teams will be supported with further developing use cases, lived experience involvement approaches and workshops on agile principles and prototyping.

3. Sustainability Phase (3 teams)

  • Support includes data science and product design expertise, support on planning user testing and lived experience involvement approaches and continuous feedback sessions.
