NIN Tokenization: Correct Step On How to Use vNIN USSD Code to protect your NIN

May 3, 2022 by legitportal Leave a Comment

NIN Tokenization: Correct Step On How to Use vNIN USSD Code to protect your NIN- This is to inform all our readers who are not aware of the Virtual NIN required for SIM services among other important functions. We will be providing you with all the information you need.

Have you registered for your National Identification Number (NIN)? Have you collected your NIN Slip? Do you have access to your National Identity Management Commission (NIMC ) slip? Do you want to verify your NIN to be sure that it is correct?

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC ) has provided a platform form where NIN holders can now protect their NIN from any external or third parties.

See full details on vNIN and how to use it to your advantage below.

What is vNIN (Virtual NIN)?

The vNIN (Virtual NIN) is a tokenized version of the person’s actual NIN which another party verifying the number cannot retain and use in a way that puts the individual’s data privacy at risk.

The Virtual NIN itself (not the NIN record it represents) expires 72 hours after being generated.

You can use the Virtual NIN when digitally verifying your identity with a verifying agent or enterprise who needs to confirm your identity before offering you a service (banks, airports, shopping delivery and so on).

How to Get vNIN

You can get your vNIN using two different methods, you are encouraged to use any of the methods easily accessible to you.

  1. You can get your vNIN using USSD
  2. You can get your vNIN using MWS Mobile App

How to Get Your vNIN via USSD

  • To generate a Virtual NIN via USSD, dial *346*3*Your NIN*AgentCode#
  • An SMS message will be sent back to you containing the Virtual NIN generated for you.

How to Get Your vNIN via the MWS Mobile App

  • Launch the MWS Mobile ID app installed on your device (Android or iOS). Make sure you have the current version of the app installed or updated on your mobile device.
  • Enter your PIN on the lock screen to continue.
  • Select the “GET VIRTUAL NIN” button on the “Home” screen.
  • Read through the “Enhanced Data Privacy” text.
  • Then click on the button with the “+” sign on the bottom right corner of the screen to start the process of generating a Virtual NIN for the verifying Enterprise you are dealing with.
  • Tap on any of the available options to either scan the Enterprise’s QR code or type in the Enterprise’s ID.
  • A Virtual NIN is generated for you to use specifically with that verifying Enterprise alone.
  • Present the Virtual NIN to the Enterprise for verification.
  • Receive a notification once verification is completed by the Enterprise.

What are the Benefits of vNIN?

  • Data privacy protection – access to an individual’s NIN by others is further restricted.
  • Generated token is encrypted and totally opaque with no correlation to the NIN.
  • The NIN holder is the only exclusive issuer.
  • Generated tokens expire after a set period of time.
  • Virtual NIN tokens generated are merchant-specific, a token generated for company A cannot be used or verified by company B.

How to check my NIMC details online

To check for your NIMC details online, simply go to the https://myportal.nimc.gov.ng or https://dashboard.nimc.gov.ng online portal. You can also access NIMC’s MWS Mobile ID app on your mobile device. Make sure your device is connected to the Internet.

Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN) Scholarships 2022

May 2, 2022 by Divine A. Leave a Comment

The Earth Journalism Network (EJN) is pleased to announce a new travel grant fund for journalists interested in attending – and reporting from – conferences and global summits related to biodiversity issues that are taking place in 2022, including those related to the UN Convention on Biodiversity (UNCBD).

Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN) Scholarships 2022 for Journalists to cover Biodiversity Conferences

This opportunity is intended to enable journalists from around the world to cover biodiversity-related conferences and negotiations for their home audiences.

Despite the uncertainty around travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic, EJN believes it is critical for journalists representing diverse countries—and especially those from the Global South—to have the opportunity to attend and report directly from these pivotal decision-making spaces, so long as they can do so safely.

These scholarships are made possible with the generous support of Arcadia Fund.

Eligible conferences may include, but are not limited to:

  • CBD negotiating session for the Global Biodiversity Framework — 21-26 June 2022 — Nairobi, Kenya
  • UN Ocean Conference — 27 June-1 July 2022 — Lisbon, Portugal
  • World Congress on Agroforestry — 17-20 July 2022 — Quebec City, Canada
  • UN CBD COP15 — August 2022 — Kunming, China
  • World Biodiversity Forum — 26 June-1July 2022 — Davos, Switzerland
  • 68th Meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC68) — 14-21 October 2022 — Portorož, Slovenia
  • 19th Conference of Parties to CITES — 14-25 November 2022 — Panama City, Panama
  • Ramsar Convention COP14 — 21-29 November 2022 — Wuhan, China

Budget proposals can include economy-class airfare, accommodation, meals, travel insurance, visa costs, mandatory COVID-19 testing and transportation costs for journalists to attend the conference of their choosing.

See-African Union Media Fellowship for African journalists and content creators

Eligibility

To be eligible for the scholarship, the applicant must:

  • Be a professional journalist from or representing an established media house and reporting from a low- or middle-income country. EJN will offer scholarships to journalists from the countries listed here. We will also consider applications from Russia. We especially encourage women, Indigenous journalists and early-career journalists to apply.
  • Have previous experience reporting on environmental issues and clearly indicate the kinds of stories they might pursue while attending the conference.
  • Commit to attending all days of the conference they are proposing to attend.
  • Provide a letter of support from an editor or media outlet, committing to publish or broadcast any stories produced as a result of this scholarship. This is expected of both staffers and freelancers.
  • Submit samples of their work, which can be uploaded as documents or web links. Stories can be in any language as long as they are accompanied by a short English synopsis. Story clips related to biodiversity issues are preferred.
  • Allow copies of stories produced from the conference to be re-published on the EJN website and distributed via social media, with due credit being given to the original media outlet.

Note: You’ll be asked to upload these supporting documents once you start the application process, so please have them handy.

Travel fund logistics

EJN expect to award scholarships of up to US$2,500 each. The amount may vary depending on whether international travel is needed for attendance at the conference. In general, applications with frugal requests will be viewed with more favor, so long as they include proper safety precautions.

Applications for conference scholarships will be accepted until May 1, 2022. Decisions will be communicated before the end of May.

Format and language of publication: Journalists may produce stories in print, online, radio or broadcast formats. Stories produced as a result of this scholarship can be in any language. We ask that Fellows translate at least one of their stories into English so it can be shared with a wider audience.

Acknowledgement of support: We fully respect journalists’ editorial independence, and throughout the conference journalists are free to report as they see fit. We do ask, however, that published stories and/or broadcasts disclose EJN support by including this tagline: “The journalist was awarded a travel scholarship by Internews’ Earth Journalism Network.”

Republication rights: Those who are awarded grants are free to publish or broadcast stories produced as a result of the scholarship first in their affiliated media as long as Internews’ EJN, its partners and the grant funders are also given rights to edit, publish, broadcast and distribute them freely.
