The EU-IOM Joint Initiative for Migrant Protection and Reintegration is organising a reporting migration competition in West and Central African countries to foster quality reporting on reintegration and protection of migrants. You are invited to apply if you are eligible. See more information below.

IOM Migration Reporter Competition 2022 for Nigerian Journalists (USD 6,000 cash prize)

Nigeria is participating in this competition.

This initiative is based on a “solutions journalism” approach, which aims at identifying and responding to key social issues. The goal of this journalistic approach is to:

Tell migration stories in a balanced and ethical way.
Share accurate information to help communities and families to support migrants in making informed migration choices.
Share fair stories that can contribute to upholding the dignity of migrants worldwide.

Requirements

To participate in this competition, journalists are invited to submit their published print, online or broadcast items (radio or video) on the below thematic areas:

Irregular migration, return and reintegration
Migrant protection
Migrants with vulnerabilities

Submission criteria

The articles or reports should have been published or aired on a TV outlet between July 2021 – March 2022
Submitted content should have been published in English by a media outlet during the competition period
Focuses on one of the thematic areas listed above
Articles should not exceed 5,000 characters
Video or audio/radio reports should not exceed 30 minutes
Participants must be:

18 years old or above
Nationals or resident of Nigeria

Benefits

Journalists will compete for a share of USD 6,000. The cash prize will be distributed as follows:

Competition rules

Entry into the competition is free.
Participants must be 18 years old and older at the time the entry was published.
Only nationals from Nigeria can participate.
The competition is open to journalists from all media houses or freelance professionals.
Entries must have a thematic focus on any of three above-mentioned areas.
Entries must have a geographic focus on Nigeria.
Articles should not exceed 5,000 characters
Video or audio/radio reports should not exceed 30 minutes
The articles of reports must be in English.
Only entries in which the applicant is the primary author or the co-author of the submitted piece will be accepted.
Multiple entries are acceptable. However, each submission must be submitted online separately.

DHL GoTrade GBSN Fellowship Program 2022 for postgraduate business students

This Fellowship Program is designed to partner selected postgraduate business students with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the developing world with the aim of fostering greater cross-border trade. This directly addresses our collective mission at GBSN –– to improve access to quality, locally relevant management and entrepreneurial education for the developing world. GoTrade is education and access.

The Fellowship Program teaches SMEs and Fellows about the value of cross-border trade and gives SMEs the tools to access the global marketplace. Helping SMEs in the world’s developing and least developed countries access global markets is a proven way to connect people and improve lives.

Eligibility Requirements

Graduate students from across the globe who meet the following criteria are invited to apply.

  1. Enrolled at a participating GBSN member school at the start fellowship
  2. Commitment to complete 12 month fellowship program
  3. Fluency in either English, French, Spanish, or Portuguese
  4. Ability to commit to an estimated 12 to 15 hours per month
  5. Proven work experience
  6. Strong analytical skills
  7. Entrepreneurial and proactive mindset
  8. Pandemic dependent, ability to travel to home country of the SME for 1-2 weeks (expenses covered)

Digital Innovation for Development in Africa (DIDA) PhD Fellowships 2022 for healthcare professionals

10 PhD fellowships are available for African nationals to join a unique programme developing the next generation of diagnostics for African Healthcare Systems.

DIDA have 10 fully funded PhD fellowships starting in 2022, with projects spanning a range of disciplines including molecular diagnostic test development, clinical evaluation, health systems research, design engineering, and data modelling.

AWIEF Digital Skills Training Program 2022 for Young Females in South Africa

Africa Women Innovation and Entrepreneurship Forum (AWIEF) has partnered with GIZ and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to launch a Digital Skills Training program for 60 young women in South Africa.

The digital skills development and training program includes a one-week Bootcamp and 12-week full-time Virtual Learning, Monday through to Friday. It will lead to two AWS Certifications (Foundation and Associate levels). Getting AWS Certified helps you showcase in-demand job skills, builds your credibility and confidence. A Pathway to Career involves mentorship and working with entrepreneurial business for up to 3 months post-graduation.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Unemployed/underemployed females aged 21 to 40 years
  • Educational qualifications: Degree, NQF Level 7, Diploma, NQF level 5
  • Computer literacy/Basic IT skills
  • Access to laptop/personal computer
  • Access to stable internet/WiFi
  • Good command of verbal and written English
  • South African citizens/Permanent residents/Foreign nationals legally resident in South Africa)
  • Willingness to take English aptitude test and IT assessment
  • Commitment to 13 weeks of full-time learning plus taking assessments to gain certification

Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) 2022 lsu Elihle Awards for African Journalists.

“Isu Elihle” is an isiZulu phrase and could be translated into English as a beautiful, great or simply a neat solution. The Isu Elihle Awards were launched in 2016 by MMA with the support of Save the Children

International, the Swedish International Development Agency and Media Network on Child Rights Development (MNCRD) based in Zambia.

These Awards aim to encourage journalist to highlight issues that are faced by children in the continent. Journalist from more than twenty countries have applied in the previous years and diverse issues about children have been raised. This shows that these awards have gained a lot of traction within the continent.

Requirements

MMA’s awards seek to give children a voice and highlight the status of children in our continent. Journalists are encouraged to submit their story ideas and these can be targeted at any mainstream news medium such as TV, Radio or Online. The top six story ideas will then be selected during an online Awards ceremony in June.

YALI RLC West Africa Emerging Leaders Program 2022 – Cohort 40 Onsite in Accra, Ghana (Fully Funded)

The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) was launched by the United States Government, to train the next generation of African Leaders who will shape the future of African business and entrepreneurship, civil society leadership, and public sector management.

Requirements:

  • 18 to 35 years of age at the time of application submission,
  • Citizens and residents of one of the following countries: Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Liberia, Sierra     Leone, The Gambia and Burkina Faso.
  • Not U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S.
  • Are eligible to receive any necessary visa to Ghana, and
  • Are proficient in reading, writing, listening and speaking English.

This track is oriented to those who are or aspire to be civically engaged and serve the public through non-governmental organizations, community based organizations, or volunteerism.

Public Policy and Management

This track is tailored to those who work or aspire to work in any level of government (including elected positions), regional organizations such as the African Union or the West Africa Community, international organizations such as the United Nations, or other publicly minded organizations or think tanks.

OSF-Africa’s priority countries are Angola, Cameroon, Chad, Cote d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Eswatini, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. OSF-Africa is now seeking proposals from these countries under the following strategic pillars (NB: Pan-African and sub-regional proposals are also welcome):

ELIGIBILITY

– OSF-Africa primarily awards grants to African organizations, may provide funding to Africa-based international organizations committed to African leadership, voice and agency on exception. OSF-Africa can grant to public institutions as well as sub-regional and continental organizations.

– OSF-Afric may support work undertaken by unregistered movements and/or individuals. Interested organizations must submit, in PDF format, a completed application proposal and budget (in English, French or Portuguese) and other documents stipulated in the application form.

Heinrich Boll Foundation Scholarships 2023/2024 for Undergraduate, Graduate & PhD Study in Germany

The Heinrich Böll Foundation grants scholarships to approximately 1400 undergraduates, graduates, and doctoral students of all subjects and nationalities per year, who are pursuing their degree at universities, universities of applied sciences (‘Fachhochschulen’), or universities of the arts (‘Kunst-/Musikhochschulen’).

We expect our scholarship recipients to have excellent academic records, to be socially and politically engaged, and to have an active interest in the basic values of the foundation: ecology and sustainability, democracy and human rights, self determination and justice.

Please note: The Heinrich Böll Foundation only accept online applications; written proof of German language proficiency (Minimum requirement: „Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang“ Level DSH 2 or „TestDaF“ Level B2) necessary.

Selection Criteria

The Heinrich Böll Foundation’s selection procedure for scholarship applicants consists of three stages:

– Submission of written application documents, including a personal reference on your social commitment and an expert reference from a university lecturer or, in the case of new students – a schoolteacher.

– An interview with a liaison lecturer, usually held at your university or near where you live

– Attendance at a selection workshop in Berlin consisting of a one-to-one interview and a group discussion.

  • Enhance employability and entrepreneurship prospects for young people and women.

The training programme is an online course comprising both synchronous and asynchronous teaching, with an expected duration of around 6 weeks. A good command of English is essential, as part of the materials and sessions will be available only in English.

Eligibility Requirements:

To be eligible to apply for the CREACT4MED training programme, you must:

  • Be an MSME or startup owner, or creative entrepreneur active in the cultural and creative industries
  • Be based or registered in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine or Tunisia
  • Have a good command of English

Young people (under 35) and women are especially encouraged to apply.

IFAD/Thomson Reuters Foundation Reporting on Food Security and Rural Development in East Africa

The UN’s International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) is sponsoring this course, which will build expertise and increase knowledge of issues faced by rural communities, help journalists to present new viewpoints and promote discussion on how small-scale agriculture can respond to the growing demand for food and on the essential need to support rural transformation as food insecurity, climate change and economic uncertainty intensify. Reporting on Food Security and Rural Development in East Africa – May 16th -19th Online Workshop

Requirements

  • Thomson Reuters Foundation is inviting journalists from East Africa to apply for this workshop, which will cover food security, food production, markets and climate issues and include a skills lab on online verification, social media and digital story telling.
  • Applicants must be full-time journalists or regular contributors working for media organisations based in the following countries: Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Tanzania.
  • Applicants should have a minimum of two years’ professional experience, have a good level in spoken and written English and should explain through their applications why they will benefit from participation in this course, and how they plan to use the learning in their professional work.

Application Procedure

  • Once selected, applicants will also be asked to provide a letter from their editor supporting their participation in the programme, including a commitment to publish the story they will produce should they participate in the mentoring component of the course. This will only be requested by TRF once applicants have been selected for the course.
  • Applicants must have access to a minimum internet speed of 8 MB/second. (You can check the speed of your device at www.speedtest.net). Applicants will also need access to a computer to participate in the training; participation from a mobile or smart phone will not be possible.

SUBMISSIONS

Application Deadline: April 27th, 2022

•    Two relevant work samples (maximum file size 5 MB). TV/Radio journalists may submit transcripts of broadcasts, a brief summary, and/or links to online versions.

•    A biography of up to 250 words outlining your career.

•    A statement of between 250 and 500 words describing how you expect to benefit from this course, how you plan to use what you learn in your professional work, and any factors affecting your work as a journalist which may be considered relevant to your application.

TRF will consider all applications on merit.
