TRAJECTS Junior Research Stays 2022 for young researchers

TRAJECTS is a DAAD-funded project that seeks to create and/or strengthen research and teaching capacities on Just Transitions in Energy, Climate and Sustainability, especially in the Global South. Within this framework, Junior Research Stays (JRS) aim to support short research stays and/or internships (2-4 months) for young researchers from, within and/or to the Global South. During TRAJECTS (2021-2025) expect to support 98 short research stays/internships for young researchers or practitioners, divided into 5 cohorts, one cohort per year.

Eligibility criteria

  • Scholarship funding: Grantees affiliated to a university as postgraduate students, PhD candidates, or researchers. Undergraduate students are not eligible.
  • Allowance funding: Practitioners without direct affiliation to a university.
  • Either the sending institution of the applicant or the host institution must be members of the TRAJECTS network.

Scope of funding

  • Monthly allowance of 860, – EUR/month for stays in the Global North or 400- EUR for stays in the Global South, for min. 75% of a full-time equivalent (FTE) position (here understood as 40h/week for 4 weeks in a month), preferably 3-4 months.
  • Travel costs (real costs; budget for up to 400,- EUR for national travel /up to 1200 EUR for South-North intercontinental flight and up to 1500 EUR for South-South intercontinental flight).
  • Insurance contributions of up to 89.- EUR will be covered for individuals travelling to Germany for the JRS.

Application procedure

  • Applications should be submitted via application form with general documents (e.g. enrolment certificate, references, writing samples, etc.).
  • Some specific documents required for the administrative host universities (UNAL or UCT) must be sent in a single PDF of max. 5 MB to the respective National Contact Point (see below).
  • Please note that some of the placements have additional application requirements (e.g. language certificates, etc.)

  • Notification of applicants: for rejections by May 16, 2022, for acceptance starting on May 30, and subject to individual placement deadlines and selection process.
  • Implementation of Junior Research Stays 2022: Jul/Aug – Nov. 2022.
  • Please note that some of the placements have additional recruitment requirements (e.g. interviews or technical tests) with additional deadlines, it is the responsibility of each candidate to monitor and fulfil the requirements and deadlines for individual placements.

Are you passionate about promoting development-focused stories using emerging technologies, and through visual, written, oral and digital media? Apply for the inaugural African Union Media Fellowship.

African Union (AU) Media Fellowship 2022 for African journalists and content creators (Fully Funded to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and Berlin, Germany)

To ensure Africa remains in the race with the rest of the world, and benefit from digital transformation, the African Union (AU) Information and Communication Directorate has joined forces with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) AU office to create the AU Media Fellowship. The Fellowship brings together innovation and creativity to present under-reported stories that break-down stereotypes and create new narratives for the Africa We Want.

The objectives of the AU Media Fellowship is to:

  1. Train and build the capacity of journalists and/or content creators, to leverage creativity and innovation within the continent;
  2. Build capacity around innovative and transformative tools in journalism and media; and
  3. Create a platform for journalists to network and share best practices on the future of journalism

The Fellowship programme will kick-off with a study tour and capacity building workshops. The 20 selected fellows will benefit from direct access to various African Union leadership, and have the opportunity for on-the-ground reporting on the AU’s work around the Agenda 2063 strategic aspirations.

Fellowship Programme:

  • The Fellowship is 12 months in duration and will begin in June 2022 with an international study trip to Germany to the “Global Media Forum”.
  • The Fellows confirm with their application that they are available for an international study trip to Germany between June 15 – July 1 2022.
  • Applicants must be able to devote time to the project if awarded a Fellowship.
  • Fellows must be available for all training sessions indicated and must be able to work on assignments in between training blocks.
  • The Fellows confirm availability for a 1-week training block in December 2022
  • The Fellows confirm availability for a 1-week training block in April 2023.

June 2022 in-person training

Fellows meet in Germany, for a 2 week-long intensive media and advocacy camp.

June – September – Online Trainings and Networking

Fellows complete remote work with a mentor. Fellows and mentors focus on the Fellow’s outputs goals, and working towards tangible advocacy and policy objectives.

October 2022

Fellows meet in-person or virtually for an intensive training and to present the results of the work period June – September.

October – December 2022

Remote work continues as Fellows receive support to write, pitch, and publish, complete media appearances, advocate for their work and broader policy change, and share their stories with targeted audiences.

December 2022

Fellows meet in Addis Ababa to be introduced to the AU and to present the outcomes of the trainings.

January 2023 – April 2023

Fellows receive continued support from their mentor until the next class is announced.

April 2023 – Final Event and Certificates of Recognition

A closing event in Addis Abeba will formally close the fellowship. Fellows graduate to become Senior Fellows and become mentors for the next cohort of AU Media Fellows.

Requirements:

  • The AU Media Fellowship is open to journalists, bloggers, vloggers, content creators, and podcasters living on the continent or the diaspora.
  • Fellows must be actively involved in innovative media either as a journalist or related field of work for at least three years with a demonstrable impact-driven track record.
  • All applicants for the AU Media Fellowship must be working journalists with at least three years of full-time, professional journalism experience or in a related field. Internships and journalism-related work completed as a university student do not count as professional experience.
  • Applicants may be affiliated or freelance journalists. However, all applicants must provide a reference letter or endorsement from a senior editor.
  • Applicants must speak, read, and write English fluently in order to fully participate in and benefit from the Fellowship.
  • With their application, the Fellows confirm willingness to report on African Union events and themes, as well as availability to be interviewed about the fellowship by international partners.
  • The Fellows confirm willingness to participate in events and workshops for duration of the fellowship.
  • Fellows must be able to travel to Berlin June 2022 and meet all criteria for eligibility for a Schengen Visa in their country, including but not limited to:
    • Having a valid passport at least until December 2022
    • Fully vaccinated against COVID-19 ( Find out more details on the website of the German Embassy in your country.)
    • We will provide you with the necessary documents needed for your visa application. You will be responsible for acquiring the visa.
    • All travel costs will be reimbursed and covered by us.

Applications should consist of: –

  • Resume: Please use a standard format (no picture, religion or marital status).
  • Coverletter: A one-page document outlining your motivation, qualifications, and experience.
  • Proposal: Please include the following three sections:
    • Story proposals: Please include a short description of the stories you plan to cover (about 200 words each), and whom you plan to contact for interviews.
    • Publication plan: Specify your plan for publication (language and target publication).
    • Social media: Briefly explain how you plan to engage with the African Union Commission in the course of the fellowship.
    • Work samples: Please submit two work samples. If your work samples are in other forms of media (e.g. video) please email us and we will accommodate these requests.

The Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program (FVSP) is a research fellowship award grants to foreign academics or professionals to conduct advanced research at U.S. institutions.

TWAS – Elsevier Foundation Project Grants for Gender Equity and Climate Action

The TWAS – Elsevier Foundation Project Grants Programme for Gender Equity and Climate Action aims to:

Promote gender equality by creating opportunities for women in climate action projects that take them outside the lab, enabling them to deepen their scientific skills, while acquiring, through training, soft skills such as project management and leadership.

Respond to and tackle communities’ needs in ways that are in line with the principles of sustainable development, focusing on the brunt of climatic changes.

Effectively transfer knowledge from scientific research to real-life scenarios for practical and tangible change under the umbrella of the “climate action” SDG.

Eligibility criteria

1. Submission of an action-based project with a direct impact on the community of a scientifically and technologically lagging country (https://twas.org/66-countries), with a primary focus on climate action (SDG 13) and secondary focus on gender equality (SDG 5).

2. The principal applicant and project leader must be a woman scientist, holding a PhD, living and working in a scientifically and technologically lagging country (https://twas.org/66-countries), employed at a university or research institute. The programme does not require a direct involvement of the university or of the research institute in the project.

3. There is no age limitation for this programme.

4. The principal applicant will work in group with up to four (4) additional secondary applicants, also women, who are either scientists or technical experts in a field relevant to the project, from any developing country. The technical expertise would complement the work of the scientist(s) and thus enhance the potential of the team. The team must not include more than five (5) members in total.

5. Projects in any area with enough relevance to climate change and gender equality are eligible.

6. Interdisciplinary approaches are welcome.

Benefits

  • The programme will award three (3) grants to Collaborative Teams composed of 2–5 members.
  • The programme will cover the costs for flights, accommodation and food. This cost does not need to be included in your application’s project budget.
  • The project grant is designed to be flexible and modular, with a total value in the USD 24,000- 25,000 range.
  • It will allow for a variety of expenses within a three-year timescale, as long as these are clearly justified by the work tasks.

Application Procedure:

  • A full budget in USD covering the whole duration of the project in Excel to be attached to the application form.
  • Necessary documentation to prove eligibility for the programme needs to be uploaded as an attachment to the application form:
    • Passport or National Identity Document (of Principal Applicant and all co-applicants)
    • PhD Certificate (for Principal Applicant only)
    • Proof of employment at the university or research institution (for Principal Applicant only)
    • A partnership declaration signed by all team members

European University Institute (EUI) Executive Training 2022 for young East African Professionals (Fully Funded to Kampala, Uganda)

The European University Institute’s School of Transnational Governance (STG) and Migration Policy Centre (MPC) join hands with the Uganda Council on Foreign Relations (UCFR) for an executive training on the cross-border governance of migration and mobility in Africa.

The interactive in-person training on the normative, institutional and financial frameworks for effective transnational governance of African migration and mobility takes place at the Fairway Hotel in Kampala (Uganda) on 20, 21, and 22 July 2022.

The Training will also provide an opportunity to examine recent regional and continental mega initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Agreement and will facilitate discussion around the transnational governance of mobility through the regulation of different political domains (border governance, development aid, education, human rights, humanitarian disasters, public security, public health, tourism, trade).

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this programme, the participants will learn how to:

  • Combine different skills for the regulation of migration and mobility
  • Understand the dynamics of bilateral, multilateral, and interregional initiatives between different political domains: border management, public security, public health, human rights, justice, humanitarian disasters, cross border trade, education, tourism, development aid
  • Incorporate insights about dynamics of migration and migration governance into policy design and practice
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the competing objectives, potentials, and limitations of the transnational governance of migration and mobility

  • Mixing theoretical approaches and policy-oriented expertise
  • Case-study approach, working on operational assignments

  •  The scholarships will be awarded to outstanding candidates from the Eastern African Region (Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda).
  • Representatives of local and national public authorities with an interest in migration and mobility
  • Professionals working in international organisations and NGOs in the field of migration and mobility
  • Young researchers on migration, mobility, and transnational governance
  • Consultants working on the management of human mobility
  • Journalists and communication professionals who want to learn more about migration and mobility
  • Individuals aiming to acquire public policy and research skills in the field of migration and mobility

Related-Heinrich Boll Foundation Scholarships 2023/2024

Scholarships:

Ten scholarships will be funded by the School of Transnational Governance (EUI) on a merit basis. Scholarships will cover the fee (accommodation, course materials, meals) and travel costs. The scholarships will be awarded to outstanding candidates applying from the Eastern African Region (Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda) according to the following criteria:

  • PhD students or early-career academics, early- or mid-career professionals (e.g. in politics, civil service, media and non-governmental organisations), able to demonstrate both professional experience and potential for future excellence in the policy sphere;
  • Genuinely engaged individuals involved in policy issues related to mobility and migration either through registration on a PhD programme or through demonstration of substantial relevant career experience;
  • Self-motivated, able to present a clear explanation of why and how the applicant will benefit from participation in the training;
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.

Applicants may only submit one application, either for a full feepaying place or for a scholarship place. Scholarships are not intended for participants who can be funded by their own institutions.

Chatham House Richard and Susan Hayden Academy Fellowship 2022/2023 for mid-career Professionals (£2,365 monthly stipend)

As a fellow, you will have the opportunity to analyse key global and national challenges and develop policy solutions.

Academy fellowships provide emerging leaders at the early to mid-point of their career with the opportunity to develop their leadership, research, networking, and communication skills, deepen their knowledge and understanding of critical issues in international affairs, publish written work and speak at key events, as well as expand their personal networks and reach – all of which will enable them to contribute to positive change. Fellows join a diverse cohort of professionals from a variety of sectors including academia, NGOs, business, government, or the media who are looking for the next step or transition in their career.

Requirements

All applicants should possess knowledge of, and an interest in, international affairs, their chosen area of research, and Chatham House’s mission and research.

This Lead 2030 Challenge aims to find and support innovative renewable energy solutions with the potential of substantially increasing the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix – welcoming solutions from young innovators that are:

  • Working to improve current renewable technologies such as solar, wind, and biofuels
  • Exploring new technologies to produce the renewable energy sources of the future
  • Increasing access to and the affordability of renewable energy for all developing countries, in particular the least developed countries.

Impactful: Solutions must have a positive social impact, for example generating employment, or developing skills.

Measurable: Impacts of solutions must have been adequately measured and/or be measurable.

Financially viable: Must be able to achieve efficiency and to survive independently through the resources they generate and/or the investments and donations they attract.

Scalable: Potential to perform as well or better after expanding in scope or size and/or being transported to other regions.

African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) PhD and Postdoc fellowships 2022

AIMS Rwanda is looking for excellent candidates with strong interest and background in research in Discrete Mathematics and Discrete Probability with applied motivations. The research topics will be mathematical, motivated by various applications like error-correction in data transmission, voting procedures, network processes and understanding machine learning algorithms.

Eligibility for PhD applicants

  • A Master’s degree in mathematical sciences (two-year degree is strongly preferable).
  • Strong interest in one of the areas indicated above.
  • Any experience in the areas indicated above is a plus.
  • Good coding skills (eg., Python, Matlab/Mathematica and similar) are a plus.
  • Academic excellence.
  • Good communication skills in English.
  • Preferably a national of an African country.

  • Monthly scholarships are 1.325 EUR (during stays in Rwanda) and 1.200 EUR (during research stays in Germany).
  • Tuition fees
  • Travel costs (if applicable)
  • Health insurance costs
  • Additional benefits are made available for mobility when commencing and finishing the scholarship in Rwanda and for research stay at the Goethe University during the course of the doctoral projects.
