The ITC NTF V x VivaTech Challenge 2022 for African digital startups ($5000 cash prize & funded to VivaTech 2022)

Mobile penetration is key to drive economic growth, connect the unconnected and build digital savvy nations. Despite a growing mobile broadband coverage, more than 520 Million Africans do not enjoy internet services, device affordability is one of the major barriers.

Expected Solutions can vary from but are not limited to:

– Bi and tripartite partnership models to finance smartphones

This is a call for application for the One Young world funded grant Summit 2022 in Manchester. This summit is a challenge for SDG7 and winner will be given $50,000. Below are more information on the challenge, eligibility requirements and how to apply.

One Young World/BP Lead2030 Challenge for SDG 7 ($50,000 grant & Funded to One Young World Summit 2022 in Manchester)

This Lead 2030 Challenge aims to find and support innovative renewable energy solutions with the potential of substantially increasing the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix – welcoming solutions from young innovators that are:

  • Working to improve current renewable technologies such as solar, wind, and biofuels
  • Exploring new technologies to produce the renewable energy sources of the future
  • Increasing access to and the affordability of renewable energy for all developing countries, in particular the least developed countries.

Challenge Criteria

Aligned: Evidently aligned with the Lead2030 Challenge for SDG 7 supported by bp. See ‘About’.

Youth-led: Founded by a person aged 18 – 30.

Focused: Well-structured time horizon, identified key stakeholders and beneficiaries, and proposed outcomes that are reasonable and well thought out.

Market ready: Product/service already in market or ready to go to market.

Impactful: Solutions must have a positive social impact, for example generating employment, or developing skills.

Measurable: Impacts of solutions must have been adequately measured and/or be measurable.

Financially viable: Must be able to achieve efficiency and to survive independently through the resources they generate and/or the investments and donations they attract.

Scalable: Potential to perform as well or better after expanding in scope or size and/or being transported to other regions.

The winning solution will receive:

  • Sponsorship to participate in the One Young World Summit 2022 in Manchester from 5 to 8 September
  • A US$50,000 grant from bp
  • 12 months of mentorship from a team of bp professionals. The mentorship team will work to accelerate your solution based on the needs of your initiative or organisation, such as:
    • Business strategy
    • Best practices for data collection
    • Monitoring and evaluation
    • Product design

How to participate

  • To participate, upload your photo here.
  • Each photograph is a single entry.
  • The uploaded file must include the photo’s title and the contributor’s name and contact information, including email address, social media handles (if applicable) and a caption listing the subject and location.

Selection

All entries will be reviewed by a panel of judges selected by the GLF, who will shortlist up to 25 photos from all eligible submissions received during the competition period.

  • Composition (30%)
  • Execution of theme (10%)

The GLF will publish the finalist photos on its online platforms. The public will be invited to vote for their favorite photos, and the submission that receives the most votes will receive the ‘popular vote’ award. The panel will choose first and second prize winners.

Entries will be accepted until 10 May. Finalists will be announced on 20 May, with the winners announced in June.

AWIEF Digital Skills Training Program 2022 for Young Females in South Africa

Africa Women Innovation and Entrepreneurship Forum (AWIEF) has partnered with GIZ and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to launch a Digital Skills Training program for 60 young women in South Africa.

The digital skills development and training program includes a one-week Bootcamp and 12-week full-time Virtual Learning, Monday through to Friday. It will lead to two AWS Certifications (Foundation and Associate levels). Getting AWS Certified helps you showcase in-demand job skills, builds your credibility and confidence. A Pathway to Career involves mentorship and working with entrepreneurial business for up to 3 months post-graduation.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Unemployed/underemployed females aged 21 to 40 years
  • Educational qualifications: Degree, NQF Level 7, Diploma, NQF level 5
  • Computer literacy/Basic IT skills
  • Access to laptop/personal computer
  • Access to stable internet/WiFi
  • Good command of verbal and written English
  • South African citizens/Permanent residents/Foreign nationals legally resident in South Africa)
  • Willingness to take English aptitude test and IT assessment
  • Commitment to 13 weeks of full-time learning plus taking assessments to gain certification

Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) 2022 lsu Elihle Awards for African Journalists.

“Isu Elihle” is an isiZulu phrase and could be translated into English as a beautiful, great or simply a neat solution. The Isu Elihle Awards were launched in 2016 by MMA with the support of Save the Children

International, the Swedish International Development Agency and Media Network on Child Rights Development (MNCRD) based in Zambia.

These Awards aim to encourage journalist to highlight issues that are faced by children in the continent. Journalist from more than twenty countries have applied in the previous years and diverse issues about children have been raised. This shows that these awards have gained a lot of traction within the continent.

Requirements

MMA’s awards seek to give children a voice and highlight the status of children in our continent. Journalists are encouraged to submit their story ideas and these can be targeted at any mainstream news medium such as TV, Radio or Online. The top six story ideas will then be selected during an online Awards ceremony in June.

The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) was launched by the United States Government, to train the next generation of African Leaders who will shape the future of African business and entrepreneurship, civil society leadership, and public sector management.

Requirements:

  • 18 to 35 years of age at the time of application submission,
  • Citizens and residents of one of the following countries: Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Liberia, Sierra     Leone, The Gambia and Burkina Faso.
  • Not U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S.
  • Are eligible to receive any necessary visa to Ghana, and
  • Are proficient in reading, writing, listening and speaking English.

Business and Entrepreneurship

This track caters to the range of emerging or aspiring entrepreneurs who expect to take on leadership roles within the private sector or build their own business ventures on the continent.N

Civil Society Management

This track is oriented to those who are or aspire to be civically engaged and serve the public through non-governmental organizations, community based organizations, or volunteerism.

Public Policy and Management

This track is tailored to those who work or aspire to work in any level of government (including elected positions), regional organizations such as the African Union or the West Africa Community, international organizations such as the United Nations, or other publicly minded organizations or think tanks.

The Open Society Foundations (OSF)-Africa: Call for Proposals

OSF-Africa’s priority countries are Angola, Cameroon, Chad, Cote d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Eswatini, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. OSF-Africa is now seeking proposals from these countries under the following strategic pillars (NB: Pan-African and sub-regional proposals are also welcome):

ELIGIBILITY

– OSF-Africa primarily awards grants to African organizations, may provide funding to Africa-based international organizations committed to African leadership, voice and agency on exception. OSF-Africa can grant to public institutions as well as sub-regional and continental organizations.

– OSF-Afric may support work undertaken by unregistered movements and/or individuals. Interested organizations must submit, in PDF format, a completed application proposal and budget (in English, French or Portuguese) and other documents stipulated in the application form.

Applications are now open for CREACT4MED’s training academy for entrepreneurs within the cultural and creative industries (CCI). For more Information see below.

CREACT4MED’s Entrepreneurship training academy for entrepreneurs ( €15,000 subgrant)

This free training course is designed to help entrepreneurs, startups and MSMEs navigate the high-risk early stages of business development and strengthen CCI businesses in the Mediterranean, ultimately contributing to sustainable economic development in the region.

The training programme will:

  • Guide participants in creating a comprehensive business plan for their business, through learning modules and assessments on each section the of the plan;
  • Explain business, legal, financial and marketing aspects of starting or running a successful CCI business;
  • Provide participants with a comprehensive overview of the work processes of cultural and creative products and services, from an entrepreneurial perspective;
  • Increase their understanding of dynamic strategies for navigating a highly competitive industry;
  • Establish a regional network of cultural and creative players in the Mediterranean and Europe, to facilitate exchanges and cooperation between projects and participants; and
  • Enhance employability and entrepreneurship prospects for young people and women.

The training programme is an online course comprising both synchronous and asynchronous teaching, with an expected duration of around 6 weeks. A good command of English is essential, as part of the materials and sessions will be available only in English.

Eligibility Requirements:

To be eligible to apply for the CREACT4MED training programme, you must:

  • Be an MSME or startup owner, or creative entrepreneur active in the cultural and creative industries
  • Be based or registered in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine or Tunisia
  • Have a good command of English

Young people (under 35) and women are especially encouraged to apply.

  • Successful trainees will have access to the MED CCI HUB and the CREACT4MED Alumni Network, which offers networking opportunities, capacity building, enhanced visibility, and access to regional events and financial providers.
  • Furthermore, successful participants will have the opportunity to apply for a subgrant of up to €15,000 for their business venture.
