United Nations University Junior Fellows Internship Programme 2022 – Tokyo, Japan (Funded)

Junior Fellows are recruited through a competitive application process twice per year. Graduate students interested in the work of the United Nations — and in particular, UNU — are encouraged to apply.

The underlying principles of the Junior Fellows Internship Programme at the Office of the Rector are centred on creating a dynamic, challenging and rewarding experience for graduate level students and young professionals. Successful candidates will contribute to the work of the Office of the Rector, the United Nations University, and the UN system as a whole. The programme provides opportunities for the development of new skills and knowledge and is a unique and constructive setting for the practical application of capacities acquired through graduate studies.

About the Programme

The programme places a strong emphasis on the training, guidance, and hands-on experience that form the foundation of a successful and beneficial internship. The programme opens with a one-week orientation designed to familiarize junior fellows with UNU, their co-workers, facilities and the working processes within the Office of the Rector. The knowledge and practical experience gained will also be beneficial to those candidates seeking a career in the United Nations. Junior fellows at the Office of the Rector can expect to gain valuable work experience while contributing in meaningful ways to UNU’s mission.

Purpose

The purpose of the Junior Fellows Internship Programme at the Office of the Rector is to:

  • promote interaction and dialogue between young scholars, professionals and UNU;
  • familiarize junior fellows with the activities of the Office of the Rector and the work of UNU;
  • provide opportunities for young professionals to gain in-depth, hands-on experience in a UN agency;
  • expose young professionals to an administrative working environment, and;
  • provide support to activities within the Office of the Rector.

Application Criteria

The qualifications that are considered in each application process include, but are not limited to, the following. The candidate:

  • is currently pursuing or has recently completed (within two years of application) postgraduate studies (master’s or doctoral), preferably in a field related to the University’s work;
  • is under 32 years of age at the time of application;
  • must not have more than 5 years of work experience in their related field;
  • has a native or fluent command of written and spoken English;
  • has excellent research, writing and analytical skills;
  • can establish and maintain effective working relations with people from diverse backgrounds;
  • demonstrates resourcefulness and creativity in problem-solving;
  • has advanced computer skills: sound, hands-on, knowledge of MS Office applications (familiarity with ICT tools and high level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel are desirable);

Slum2School is a volunteer driven development organization transforming the society by empowering underserved children in slums and remote communities with quality education, entrepreneurial skills, and psychosocial support to enable them to realize their full potential and become social reformers. Founded in 2012, we recognize that there are severe shortcomings in the educational sector in Africa and in this area, we are committed to transforming the lives of Africa’s most precious resource – her children.

We provide educational scholarships, create safe learning spaces, use 21st century pedagogy and technology to improve learning outcomes and provide several other health and psychosocial supports for underserved children in slums and hard to reach communities. This is achieved by collaborating with the government, private sector, individuals, civil society organizations and other developmental agencies towards building a resourceful and sustainable network. Description of Role

  • The Stakeholder and Corporate Partnership Manager is responsible for identifying, building, and maintaining strong external relationships with local and international partners.
  • Working to achieve the organization’s long-term fundraising goals through strategic partnerships, external relations management, brand positioning, implementing and sustaining effective financial and partnership growth strategy/models.
  • The Stakeholder and Corporate Partnership Manager will be the focal point between external stakeholders and the organization.

Core Responsibilities

  • Build and cultivate a high-performing partnership team and play an active role in attracting, and retaining the right corporate partners.
  • Oversee together with the legal team, the development, and management of contracts/agreements with partners and stakeholders.
  • Research and leverage high-value business development and partnership opportunities.
  • Reporting & Supervision
  • The Stakeholder and Corporate Partnership Manager will report to the Head of Operations.
  • Formalize and launch a corporate annual giving program.
  • Proactive development of new high-value opportunities that adequately meet fundraising goals.
  • Oversee, design, update and implement fundraising strategies to engage industry partners and provide unrestricted funding for Slum2School Africa growth plan.
  • Develop and implement an external communication strategy.
  • Work proactively to drive innovation, including the adaptation and introduction of successful media formats and platforms in new territories, to reach new audiences.
  • Develop and maintain key contacts and ensure that the organization is abreast of trends and changes in development as it relates to partnerships and relevant themes.
  • Work with the Head of Operations to identify opportunities for organizational growth and in the refinement of a set of management metrics to predict outcomes.
  • Liaise with the Head of Finance in the development of sustainable financial management and reporting strategies.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have the following minimum qualifications:

  • MBA or relevant Graduate Degree in Management, Communications or a related field.
  • 5 years of experience in a related role.
  • Proven record of stakeholder management and partnership experience in a for-profit or nonprofit organization.
  • Proven record of leadership skills at a mid or senior organizational level.

  • Sound understanding of the Corporate Banking business and its related products, pertinent regulations affecting it and the lending and credit approval process
  • Consistently demonstrates clear and concise written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong planning, negotiation, organizational and analytical skills
  • Experience with large corporate clients, capital markets products, derivatives, credit, cash management, trade,finance and securities products
  • Series 7 and 63 licenses.

About the Role

  • The Mechanical Technicians is responsible for operating, cleaning and maintaining their plant and equipment to meet the increasing volume and quality demands in a reliable and cost efficient manner.
  • They are also responsible for participating in all PPMS/EISC improvement initiatives in their department and for their own training and development. They will report directly to the Site Electrical Services Manager.

Your Role

  • To maintain (inspect and adjust) and repair line equipment proactively as per maintenance targets in order to continually improve line efficiency, to optimize equipment availability and to minimize losses and risk.
  • Share and apply new skills as acquired, participate in departmental Continuous Improvement initiatives and PPMS/EISC to meet/exceed improvement targets. Consider general opportunities to improve work areas.
  • Compile and communicate whatever reports are required – either original reports or those generated automatically. This includes status sheets, check sheets, condition supervising sheets, etc.
  • To apply technical, process, continuous improvement and individual/team development skills to optimise overall brewery improvement and plant performance.
  • Provide a comprehensive production service on plant and equipment to which they are primarily allocated: operating and cleaning, carrying out maintenance schedules, responding to breakdowns, assessing & monitoring plant performance on an ongoing basis and attending to all other process duties in a timely manner
  • Focus on Planned and Corrective maintenance. Deliver the best possible plant operation by maximising plant availability and efficiency of operation through execution of Planned Preventative Maintenance schedules.
  • Lead spares required by their plant and equipment – includes draw down stock from locally provided “bins” and be accountable for whatever stock is drawn down.
  • Optimise product quality, through continuous observation and attention to detail, delivering RFT on quality and control parameters. Respond to non-conformances in a timely manner to keep process on track. Apply, record & share learning’s to prevent re-occurrence

Outputs:

  • Output 2: Reinforcing the operationalization of national protection mechanisms and peer support networks to ensure journalists’ rapid access to legal assistance, bolster their defense and enhance their safety, taking into account the gendered nature of the threats against them;
  • Output 3: Supporting investigative journalism that contributes to reduced impunity for crimes against journalists by holding the justice system accountable and by pursuing investigative work that risks being censored when journalists are attacked; imprisoned, or murdered; and to enhancing the safety of those conducting this line of work;

2023 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Innovation in Engineering ( £500,000 Prize )

The £500,000 prize is the world’s most prestigious engineering accolade, awarded to up to five engineers responsible for a bold, groundbreaking engineering innovation of global benefit to humanity.

Eligibility

Entry to the Prize is open to:

  • any living individual (or not more than five living individuals working as a team);
  • of any nationality;
  • who is personally responsible for a ground-breaking innovation in engineering which has been of global benefit to humanity. Self-nomination is not permitted.
  • The Trustees reserve the right to reject any nomination where, in their reasonable opinion, there is or is likely to be a conflict of interest between the nominees, nominators or any referees and any other nomination or the Prize more generally.

The Prize

The winners will be awarded:

  • a total cash prize of £500,000 (five hundred thousand GBP); and
  • appropriate memorabilia to be decided by the Trustees in their sole discretion (the “Prize”). In the event that the Prize is received by more than one individual (but not more than five individuals, as above) collaborating under a single nomination, the Prize money will be shared between the winners as determined by the Trustees in their sole discretion on the advice of the Judging Panel.

Selection process

  • A selection of nominations will be short-listed by the Judging Panel for final consideration. The winning nomination will be chosen by the Trustees, advised by the Judging Panel.
  • All nominees and their nominators are deemed to accept that decisions of the Trustees are final in connection with the Prize and the Trustees shall have absolute discretion as to whether an entry is to be short-listed to win or selected to win the Prize from the short-list.

The Google for Startups Black Founders Fund Africa Program 2022 for early-stage African Startups ($4 million in funding)

Through the Google for Startups Black Founders Fund Africa, Google is supporting early-stage, Black-founded startups on the continent. Google want to bridge the existing fundraising gap for Black startup founders in Africa’s fast-growing technology landscape.

Founders will receive up to $100K in equity-free cash, up to an additional $200K in Google Cloud Credits, and access to the best of Google—people, products, and practices.

Eligibility Requirements

Startups must be:

  • Headquartered in Africa or has a legal presence on the continent
  • Building for Africa and a global market
  • Creating jobs, able to show growth potential to raise more funding, and making an impact

With a founding team that is:

  • Diverse, with at least one Black C-level founding member
  • Directly supporting the Black community

Technical requirements

  • Technology startups with a live product in-market or a business where technology is core to their ability to scale (the initiative is not for consultancies or not-for-profits)
  • Compatibility with Google products—our products can accelerate your growth
