Media Defence East Africa Women Litigation Surgery for women Lawyers.

Media Defence is calling for applications from women lawyers based in Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda to participate in a forthcoming litigation surgery on the right to freedom of expression and digital rights, with particular focus on online violence against journalists. Media Defence East Africa Women Litigation Surgery for women Lawyers.

Successful applicants will be provided with learning material and invited to participate in the in-person East Africa Women Litigation Surgery in Nairobi, Kenya from 23 to 25 August 2022. Participants will become active members of our Media Defence network, which will provide
opportunities for engagement regionally and internationally in order to develop a sustainable network of women lawyers.

objectives

  • To develop knowledge about freedom of expression and its challenges online, with particular focus on online violence against journalists;
  • To engage with key principles of international law as well as with regional and international mechanisms relevant to litigating freedom of expression online;
  • Address legal challenges which are particularly relevant to women journalists and lawyers;
  • To discuss emerging trends in digital rights and potential litigation strategies;
  • To build a digital rights network and help facilitate its engagement with international legal mechanisms and global civil society initiatives; and support and develop working relationships amongst women lawyers who take on cases relating to digital rights and freedom of expression online and to whom women journalists can more easily turn.

Requirements

  • The litigation surgery is open to women lawyers who work and reside in Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda;
  • Applicants must have a demonstrated interest in and/or knowledge of freedom of expression, digital rights, internet freedom and/or related issues;
  • Applicants must be proficient in English;
  • With their application, applicants are requested to submit a case study of a case that they are litigating or intend to litigate and that could be discussed during the litigation surgery. However, it will be sufficient for participants who do not have a case that is pending to have identified a relevant law, practice or policy relating to online freedom of expression that they would like to challenge in court. Such participants must demonstrate their ability and willingness to pursue the case after the surgery;
  • The following non-exhaustive list of themes are a guide for the type of cases that could be submitted with the application:
    Cybercrime laws
    Access to the internet
    Data privacy
    Data protection
    Defamation
    Hate speech
    National Security
    Potential for future collaboration with Media Defence; and,
  • Commitment to continued engagement with the network of digital rights lawyers in the region.
  • A maximum of 12 participants will be selected. Media Defence is committed to equality and diversity and will therefore consider gender, age and country of origin in the selection of participants. Due to gender disparity in previous litigation surgeries, this event is exclusively for women lawyers.

Storekeeper at Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF)

Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters and exclusion from healthcare. Médecins Sans Frontières provides assistance to populations in distress, to victims of natural or man-made disasters and to victims of armed conflict. They do so irrespective of race, religion, creed or political convictions.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Executing the stock management activities (receipt, storage, and issuance to projects or other departments of medical supplies, food items, spare parts, tools, equipment and/ or other logistics materials), according to the line manager’s instructions and MSF standards and protocols, in order to ensure the overall functioning of MSF activities.

Accountabilities

  • Supervising materials and goods orders and dispatch in order to ensure its rational use.
  • Receiving orders and deliveries, identifying and reporting potential discrepancies against cargo manifest or others. Stores materials in accordance with the system in force in order to ensure continuous availability.
  • Updating and/or creating stock cards for all stock items immediately after reception of goods. Checking the received cold boxes and controlling the cold chain-monitoring card
  • Preparing orders on time before sending goods, and packs (according to transport means) weighs and labels freight with corresponding shipping number, destination, number of shipping units, waybill number, weight and mode of transport in accordance with the line manager’s instructions
  • In conjunction with the line manager, performing physical stock counts in accordance with the frequency previously defined. Following up stock levels with regards to alarms thresholds, stock out and expiry dates.
  • Controlling warehouse limited access to authorized personnel and ensuring doors and other exits are secured. Immediately informing the line manager of any problems arising in the course of the work, particularly with regard to damage, loss, attempted break-ins or theft in the warehouse.
  • Keeping a special control of “sensitive” goods: numbers of lots, expiry dates, packaging and special storage conditions

Context Specific Accountabilities

  • Receiving goods arriving to the store, checking its status/condition and amounts in the waybill
  • Preparing outgoing items in a clean and optimized way by appropriately packing, sealing and labelling goods, assisting with recording the exits on stock cards and project form, and ensuring good quality of cold chain when needed
  • Ensuring cleanliness of common working areas
  • Ensuring proper use, storage and maintenance of the equipment and tools provided
  • Informing superiors of any incident that may occur in the course of his/her work
  • Helping MSF staff carry heavy items, if necessary
  • Ensuring that goods are well organized and stored in a clean area to be visible and traceable i.e. assisting in the stock inventory, storing items according to nature and use, and ensuring that the temperature in the store is appropriate and items that require cold chain are correctly stored
  • Carrying out basic maintenance of the store, ensuring security conditions (keeping unauthorized staff out, locking, etc….)
  • The list above is not exhaustive, it is a summary, the activities will evolve according to the need

Minimum Required Skills and Qualifications
Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent in warehousing or supply related studies.
  • Minimum of 2 years work experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel databases and MS Office (Outlook, Word)

Experience:

  • Previous experience as storekeeper is desirable.
  • Essential knowledge of basic mathematics and use of measuring equipment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills .
  • This job description may be amended in line with the activities or evolution of the Mission.
  • Two years’ experience in Similar Role is desirable (Preferably working experience with MSF or other NGOS)
  • Knowledge of proper bookkeeping and inventory management
  • Familiarity with standard concepts and best practices in a stockroom or warehouse environment.

Roles and Responsibilities

The Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) invite youth-led organizations, networks or coalitions to propose new and innovative ideas and solutions to support a just transition towards environmentally sustainable economies and societies for all. IsDB-ILO Youth Green Skills Accelerator Challenge 2022 for youth-led organizations

The Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) recognize the leadership that young people have demonstrated in the fight against climate change and their key role in driving climate innovation, including amid the COVID-19 induced jobs crisis. To assist young people in further translating their activism, commitment and creativity into action, the two organizations have designed the “Youth Green Skills Accelerator Challenge Call”, with the overarching goal of promoting youth participation and skills for green jobs for a just transition.

Requirements

Any youth-led organizations, networks or coalitions with contractual and registered capacity that has been in existence for at least two calendar years prior to the call deadline. The applicant must be registered in IsDB – ILO common member States.

By organizations, networks or coalitions, we mean government agencies, employers’ and workers’ organizations, cooperatives, education and training institutions (including schools, training providers, and universities), NGOs and civil society organizations, and other educational and research institutions.

Prizes and benefits

Up to 10 finalists will receive mentoring and training for a period of one week to improve their projects. Following the period, 3 winners will be selected at the online pitch event and receive the following support:

Financial support

The top three ideas will be awarded USD 50,000; USD 30,000; and USD 20,000 respectively, to implement the proposed solution.

Technical support through an online Innovation Lab

Participation in the Innovation Lab: Through boot camps and remote mentoring, the winning proposals will receive technical support to turn, refine, develop, and pilot their ideas. The duration of the lab is between three and six months, depending on the stage of development of the solution.

Global visibility

The winning proposals will receive support to raise awareness of their ideas and solutions, including an invitation to attend COP 27, where they will present their projects; press articles in the media, videos, among others.

Access to a network of skills innovators

The winners and shortlisted entries will join the ILO Skills Innovation Network. They will be updated on the latest advances in innovation and skills development and get access to tools, resources and knowledge-sharing events that they can use to build new ideas and solutions

The New Business Challenge 2022 for Ghanaian students & young professionals

The New Business Challenge is a unique international Expedition Program where Dutch and Ghanaian students & young professionals explore the business relationship and opportunities between the two countries. This challenge is all about learning, exploring and innovating to improve the international business skills of the participating students & young professionals and to arrive at innovative business solutions for Dutch and Ghanaian companies.

The challenge exists of a Summer School and Expedition Trips to The Netherlands and Ghana.

Requirements

The NBC is open to Dutch and Ghanaian residents with the following requirements:

  • Holding a valid Dutch or Ghanaian passport (which has to be valid at least 6 months before traveling to Ghana or The Netherlands).
  • Covid-19 vaccinated (this is required to travel into The Netherlands and into Ghana)
  • Studying at a university (or HBO) or graduated for the maximum of 3 years;
  • A specific study background is not required as long as you are an entrepreneurial and an open minded candidate who can think independently and is motivated to explore business opportunities between The Netherlands and Ghana and might be interested in a career with an international component;
  • Not older than 28 years of age.

Summer School

15 – 19 August 2022

The Summer School is a 5 day program and takes place simultaneously in each country for 24 selected students & young professionals. The Summer School is all about learning in an interactive way about the business relationship between The Netherlands and Ghana, the existing policy programs and how business is being done between the two countries. The program is a combination of on location and online elements.  You will participate in lectures of experts, meet entrepreneurs, go on a company visit and collaborate online in intercultural teams to work on a real-life business case and familiarize yourself with the (work) culture of the other country. Experienced trainers will facilitate the program.

Expedition Trip NL

21 – 30 October 2022

Students & young professionals that participated in the Summer School in August 2022 can indicate that they want to join the Expedition Trips and apply for their placement in the Expeditions. Only 8 participants from each country will be selected to join the Expedition trips. In October of 2022, the 16 participants will meet in The Netherlands for the Expedition Trip NL. The Expedition Trip is all about exploring and innovating. Participants will go on 2 physical company visits and meet Dutch entrepreneurs that are doing business with Ghana. Participants will explore the business opportunities from the Dutch perspective and brainstorm in intercultural teams about innovative business solutions. A Dutch and a Ghanaian coach will jointly provide training and coaching.

Expedition Trip Ghana

10 – 19 October 2022

In October 2022, the 16 participants meet again, but now in Ghana for the Expedition Trip. Participants will go on 3 physical company visits and meet Ghanaian entrepreneurs that have a connection with The Netherlands. During the trip, you will explore the business opportunities from the Ghanaian perspective and brainstorm in intercultural teams about innovative business solutions. Participants will build on the skills and knowledge that they’ve acquired during the Summer School and the Expedition Trip NL. At the end of this Expedition Trip, the participants will present their solutions at an event at the Netherlands Ambassador’s Residence in Accra. A Dutch and a Ghanaian coach will jointly provide coaching and guidance to the participants.

Benefits

If you are selected for the Summer School, your accommodation costs are fully covered during the Summer School. And once you are selected to participate in the Expedition Trips, your travel- and accommodation costs are fully covered during the Expedition Trips.

Please note:

  • During the Summer School in Ghana all participants stay over at the same accommodation for the whole period of the Summer School (5 nights)
  • During the Expedition Trips all participants stay over at the same accommodation for the whole period of the study trip (9 nights each trip)

If you participate in the Summer School, you have the chance to go on two unforgettable Expedition Trips in the Netherlands and Ghana full of meetings, cultural exchange, field trips, sightseeing and of course fun!

The NBC 2022 exists of a Summer School and two Expedition Trips. In order for students and young professionals to participate, they have to be available and present at all days.

Purpose of the Position

  • The Laboratory Officer will work in close collaboration with different States laboratory quality assurance officers in ensuring effective and quality laboratory services in selected LGAs.
  • Hierarchically, the Laboratory Officer reports to the Programme Coordinator.

Responsibilities

As a Laboratory Officer you will:

  • Coordinate and supervise Connectivity Project supported laboratories to take initiatives to improve tuberculosis control through other TB Laboratory technologies.
  • In collaboration with QA officer, LGATBLS and other relevant stakeholders, support assessment and supervision of lab services in all supported labs.
  • Perform other additional duties as assigned.

Education:

  • A Degree in the Medical Laboratory Sciences and related fields (an MPH would be an advantage).

Knowledge / Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years working experience in TB and/or HIV programs.
  • Experience as laboratory quality assurance officer or laboratory manager.
  • Experience in working with: HIV & TB program; USAID projects or any development partner.

Job Purpose / Objectives

  • Responsible for bench work activities around new product development, product reformulation, pilot plant operation and factory scale-up trials.
  • Responsible for sensory evaluation of raw materials and finished products.
  • Ensure completion of bench work activities, shelf life studies and development of product prototypes within agreed timelines.

Key Responsibilities / Activities

  • Carry out bench work activities around innovation and development of formulation prototypes for new product development projects.
  • Perform bench work activities around optimization and improvement of existing PNG formulations for both quality and margin delivery.
  • Support activities around claim substantiation and nutritional labeling for new products along with product instructional information.
  • Support development, validation, release, maintenance and review of technical specifications for raw materials and finished products.
  • Conduct the physical and sensory evaluation of potential raw materials prior to approval for use.
  • Support the management of the technical aspects of development, pre qualification and integration of suppliers or raw materials and ingredients.
  • Set up trial methodology to track and monitor shelf life and product/pack stability for new and reformulated products.
  • Support the maintenance and continual certification of the PNG Food Safety Management System to the requirements of ISO 22000 standards.
  • R&D Laboratory, raw material and sample management.
  • Supervise the R&D pilot plant operative and Interns.
  • Carry out internal sensory sessions from sample preparation, questionnaire preparation, panelist selection, sample administration, statistical analysis and report writing.
  • Support factory acceptance trials to ensure smooth production scale-up from laboratory-scale and pilotscale to factory level.
  • Support activities around the operation and maintenance of the R&D Extrusion pilot plant for new product and process development and support the development, modification and implementation of test methods for product and raw material evaluation.

Education & Experience

  • A University Degree in Food Science and Technology, Biochemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and other relevant disciplines.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in Research and Development in FMCG (Food and Beverages).

Job Description

  • Identify potential partners/ users for the Bank’s Data Products & Services and work with the Team Lead to engage them to get favourable terms for proposed monetization opportunities
  • Identify and qualify new market opportunities and work with the Team Lead and Unit Head to develop new product roadmaps to address their needs
  • Collaborate with existing and potential partners to define new monetization routes and opportunities for growth
  • Work closely with internal teams to drive development of produts/ initiatives and processes to deliver unique partnerships and monetization opportunities
  • Providing input with regards to market and competitive trends that are impacting Data Products customers and those that are seen as opportunities for new business
  • Identification of opportunities to acquire and grow customer relationships and increase their profitability through improved targeting, best-in-class product/services and appropriate channel strategies
  • Work on the development of business proposals for the new ideas with the guidance of the Team Lead and Unit Head and follow through to ensure they are developed, approved and executed
  • Work with product development teams on new products and current product enhancements ensuring achievement of strategic revenue objectives
  • Report, track and analyze the performance of features in production and advise Team Lead and the Unit Head, Data Monetization on observed trends, gaps or issues
  • Tracking of value realization and measurement of business impact of Data Monetization initiatives during/after implementations.
  • Design internal product flier to engender and sustain product knowledge amongst staff

The Association for Research on Civil Society in Africa (AROCSA), in collaboration with The Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA), The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) and The Université Cheikh Anta Diop (UCAD), is pleased to announce the call for applications for the Emerging African Scholars PhD Workshop, with support from the Ford Foundation.

AROCSA Emerging African Scholars PhD Workshop 2022

The PhD Workshop is a full-day professional development and intellectually engaging workshop. The seminar seeks to provide guidance for emerging scholars on the path to a successful career, help sharpen their research skills and address the challenges that African PhD students face. The GOAL is to provide scholarly research support, professional advice and mentoring for doctoral students in the field of nonprofit management, philanthropy, civil society, social entrepreneurship, and voluntary action studies.

Eligibility

The program is open to doctoral students from Africa whose research focus is on nonprofit management, philanthropy, civil society, social entrepreneurship and voluntary action studies in Africa. Students at the various under-listed stages in their doctoral program are encouraged to apply:

  • Defended a dissertation proposal
  • Not yet defended a dissertation proposal
  • Whose dissertation plans are not yet fully formed

Requirements

Applications must include the following:

  1. 5-page description of dissertation research or proposed research outline (double space, 12pt font with one inch margins)
  2. Brief Statement of Purpose, outlining how the student expects to benefit from participation in the Virtual PhD Workshop
  3. Recommendation from student’s dissertation advisor/faculty advisor

Selection Criteria

Selection of candidates will be based on the following criteria:

  1. Potential quality and impact of proposed research
  2. Centrality of the work to philanthropy, nonprofit management, civil society, social entrepreneurship, and voluntary action studies in Africa.
  3. Potential for the student to gain from the workshop

NB: This workshop is FREE of charge. Please ensure that you are available to attend the workshop physically on SEPTEMBER 7, 2022 in Dakar, Senegal.

The ACC invites applications from two suitably qualified applicants to apply for these one-year renewable Postdoctoral Research Fellowships (renewable for up to a total of two years, depending on satisfactory progress). Two positions are available. See more information below.

African Urban Futures Postdoctoral Research Fellowships 2022 for young Africans.

The successful candidates will be part of the Urban Policy Research Chair at ACC. Beyond the pursuit of their own postdoctoral research, the successful applicant is expected to contribute to the project in one of the following two domains:

  • Undertake case study research to identify the emergent pockets of urban development innovation in African cities that, if stitched together, may help create an imaginary of alternative futures for African cities.
  • Undertake an analysis of the crucial ‘agents of change’ for this new approach to urban Futures, in conjunction with various urban and city networks and key stakeholders that shape the urban governance landscape in Africa.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants are expected to have completed a doctoral degree in an area of study relevant to urban studies within the past five years (e.g. Urban Planning, Urban Studies, Urban Geography, and related fields).
  • Applicants may not previously have held permanent full-time professional or academic posts.
  • As the Lab has a pan-African focus, applicants should have an extensive knowledge of cities across least two different sub-regions of Africa as defined by the United Nations (Southern Africa, East Africa, Middle Africa, West Africa, and Northern Africa) and a track record of relevant research and publication.
  • Fluency in English is a requirement and fluency in French will be an advantage.
  • The successful candidate will be required to comply with the University’s approved policies, procedures, and practises for the postdoctoral sector.

Benefits

  • The fellowships are valued at R350,000 per annum and are tenable for one year, renewable for a total of up to two years subject to satisfactory progress.
  • There are no other benefits. The fellowships are compliant with the SARS policies/rules and are therefore exempt from taxation.

Non-South African citizens may be required to apply for a study visa.

Associate Professor Warren Smit (warren.smit@uct.ac.zamailto:faranaaz.bennett@uct.ac.za)  by no later than 10 June 2022:

  • A letter of application stating your expertise, research interests, experience (particularly with regard to urban research in a least two sub-regions in Africa), and motivation for this position;
  • A two-page concept note on what you see as the key sustainability challenges facing African cities, with some suggested approaches to using futuring to address those challenges;
  • A CV including a list of publications/scholarly output;
  • Copies of academic transcripts;
  • Names and contact details of at least two academics who have taught, supervised, or worked alongside you.
