European University Institute (EUI) Young African Leaders Programme 2022/2023

European University Institute (EUI) Young African Leaders Programme 2022 (2,500 Euros per month)

The Young African Leaders Programme is a fellowship scheme that provides a unique opportunity for policy experts from Africa (all regions) to further develop their policy work and professional and leadership skills amidst international experts.

Furthermore, the Programme aims at creating new networks, connecting a strong cohort of leaders committed to driving change in their own countries and across the continent, as well as address the gender gaps and foster inclusivity in leadership roles.

In the dynamic academic environment of the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, selected participants will take part in workshops, training and skills development sessions, conferences, and study visits in Europe. Interaction with the other fellows, policymakers and the academic community at the EUI will make this a truly unforgettable experience.

The structure of the Programme will be as follows:

  • Executive Training Seminars on thematic issues;
  • Professional Development Workshops, providing a set of leadership skills, tools and concrete case studies;
  • Study Visits to EU institutions, relevant academia, and international organisations
  • Final individual written assignment
  • Award of the YALP certificate of attendance
  • Connection to network of scholars and practitioners knowledgeable in relevant transnational governance

The three-month leadership programme takes place from the 1 September 2022 to the 30 November 2022. Fellowships are fully-funded with a grant of € 2,500 per month. The selected African fellows must live in the area of Florence for the duration of their stay. The language of the Programme is English. Where possible, the STG will seek to integrate French. The Programme has an intensive training schedule, and is therefore a full-time and fully-funded fellowship scheme.  

Who should apply?

The Programme targets mid-career, high potential policy-makers, diplomats, and professionals from Africa, working in national and local authorities, regional, continental, international organisations and development partners, civil society organisations, academia, media and private sector, in Africa. More precisely, the Programme is open to professionals (M/F/X), mid-career and executives alike, who are nationals of African countries, residing in Africa and are up to the age of 35.

This Programme is supported by the European Commission, Directorate-General for International Partnerships. This Call for applications is launched under a suspension clause, related to the final approval of the financing decision of the Programme by the European Commission. According to such clause, should not the financing decision be taken, the EUI/STG reserve the right to cancel the call without any prejudice to the Institute and potential beneficiaries.

Education and Field

  • Potential beneficiaries must hold a Master’s Degree or higher qualification. They should be committed to contribute to strategic themes and policy areas relevant to transnational governance. These include climate change and resilience, gender empowerment, cross-border economic and resource governance, diplomacy, digital politics, trade and investment, education, science and technology, skill development, migration and mobility, humanitarian disasters such as pandemics, regional integration and regional governance, democracy and human rights, peace and security. These areas are crucial to deliver sustainable and locally-owned development in African countries, as well as to contribute to the effective implementation of the Africa-EU-Partnership, the African Union’s Agenda 2063, African Continental Free Trade Area, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Grant

The basic grant is € 2,500 per month.

Successful applicants who receive other grants or salaries must disclose this to the EUI. The amount of the Fellowship will be fixed at a lower rate (minimum €1,750 per month) depending on the amount of the additional income (upon production of relevant supporting documents).

Medical Insurance

Fellows must have adequate medical insurance coverage during their stay at the Institute. They can either provide proof of their own insurance scheme, or subscribe to the EUI’s private sickness and health insurance scheme at their own expense. See the Cigna Insurance Scheme for conditions.

Travel Expenses

Fellows (but not their families) receive reimbursement for the incoming trip from their place of origin to Florence, and for the outgoing trip to their destination at the end of their fellowship.

  • First-class rail (travel by car is also reimbursed on this basis).
  • Economy class air fare

The maximum amount for travel reimbursement amounts to €1,200 including both incoming and outgoing trip. Taxi expenses are not reimbursed.

  2. Short biography is requested in the application form. The bio serves the purpose of the selection process and will also be used for communications purposes if the applicant is accepted for the fellowship. It should be written in third person singular and be maximum 1000 characters with spaces.
  3. Statement of Purpose in PDF. The statement of purpose is where an applicants can tell their story about who they are and why they deserve to be part of the Young African Leaders Programme and the EUI and STG at large. It gives the admissions committee a chance to get to know you and understand how you add value to the Programme. The statement of purpose (maximum 4 pages) should be written in the following structure:
    • Introduction – brief introduction by the applicant about their background and motivation behind applying to the Young African Leaders Programme at STG-EUI.
    • Body – 1) relevant experience and accomplishments that relate to the applicant’s field of work, 2) professional goals as they relate to the Africa Leadership Programme, 3) reason of interest in the Programme and 4) what value the applicant can bring to the Programme
    • Conclusion – summarise the statement and add key points on why the admission committee should select the applicant.
  4. Short summary of the Statement of Purpose (maximum 1000 characters)
  5. A copy of the highest educational certificate and the medium of instruction this highest level education was offered.
  6. Name and contact details of one referee, preferably a person who has worked with the applicant, whom the EUI may contact. Preference should be given to non-academic referees. Referees also have the option to submit a reference letter through the application portal (deadline 1 May 2022).

Who can apply for FMBN Rent to Own

  • Any Nigerian above the age of 18
  • Applicant must be a contributor to the National Housing Fund for a minimum period of six (6) months.
  • Applicant must have satisfactory evidence of regular flow of income to guarantee loan repayment.

Product Features:

  • The maximum purchase price of the property shall not be more than N15,000,000.00 (Fifteen Million Naira), affordability of which shall be determined by the income limit of the beneficiary and the projected tenancy duration.
  • The rent repayment period shall not exceed thirty (30) years.
  • Interest rate shall be 7% of the price of the property on annuity basis.
  • Monthly or annual payment shall not exceed 1/3 of the applicant’s monthly/annual income.
  • The facility shall not be available to any contributor who has enjoyed an NHF loan to buy or build a house.
  • Properties would be insured against Fire & Special Perils and Credit Life Assurance as covered in interest rate.

  • Applicant must be free of any criminal conviction by the court of law.

JAIZ Bank PLC And SMEDAN Matching Fund programme- The joint programme partners – Jaiz Bank Plc and Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) – are inviting applications from all suitably-qualified micro and small enterprises (MSEs) located in the following State in Nigeria to apply for the Matching Fund programme 2022.

  3. Niger State
  4. Kogi State
  5. Jigawa State
  6. Bauchi State
  7. Adamawa State
  8. Gombe State

It should be clearly understood that programme particulars set out in paragraphs 1 – 3, above, form the basis for consideration of financing requests under this programme. Applications from qualified micro and small enterprises for facilities under this programme shall be received over a period of six (6) weeks or when the allocated quota of business plans per participating state is exhausted (whichever comes first).

Programme Terms And Conditions

The here-under definitions, terms and conditions shall apply under the Programme, viz:

i. Target Beneficiaries Definition: Target beneficiaries for this Programme shall be labour intensive, micro or small enterprises (MSEs), operating in the real sector. These shall ideally be innovative value-added, agri-business products that are establishing footprint in the Nigerian market, and require additional funds to increase output.

Qualified enterprises shall also be utilizing local raw materials (at least 65%); are regulatory compliant and capable of generating employment for at least 2 – 5 additional persons as a result of the facility obtained.

Finally, in tine with current emphasis for back-to-back value-chain financing, agribusiness on-farm/ware-housing enterprises shall also be considered.

ii. Financing available under the programme: Prospective beneficiaries may apply for financing within the range of N2 million N5 million, with enterprise modernization and/or expansion as the focus.

iii. Conditions/Terms applicable: The mark up/profit rate applicable on all financing, under this programme, shall not exceed single digit per annum. The financing tenor is for a maximum period of 30 months, effective from the date of first disbursement. This is inclusive of moratorium (which may vary between 3 – 6 months, depending on the type of enterprise).

Beneficiaries must complete a finance application form, sign all necessary documents with Jaiz Bank Plc, and shall also bear cost of all approved charges (i.e. Application fee of N5,000.00 and N5,000.00 for cost of conducting credit search on beneficiaries on at least two (2) Credit Bureau sites for processing facilities which is in line with the CBN regulatory provisions and RTGS transfer charges. These total N10,000.00 for both fees).

The mandatory Agricultural Insurance cover by NAIC and also the key man Takaful insurance by a reputable Takaful company applies to all beneficiaries over the project life.

iv. Applicable Security: In line with the conditions/provisions of this programme, processing of this facility will require fulfilment and provision of the following:

a. Provide Bank Verification Number (BVN).

b. Execute Global Standing Instruction (GSI) order.

c. NIRSAL Credit Guaranty Cover.

d. A moveable asset to be registered under the National Collateral Registry (NCR), in line with CBN policy for facility/financing above N500,000.00.

e. Key man risk Takaful insurance cover.
