SCAR Fellowship Program for Developing Countries 2023 – Apply

June 29, 2023 by Cyril O Leave a Comment

SCAR Fellowship Program for Developing Countries 2023 – Apply. Applications are now open for the SCAR Fellowship Program 2023. Interested persons should see how to apply below and the requirements.

About Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR)

The plans for the IGY, the International Geophysical Year, 1957-58, included a major Antarctic component. At the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU) Antarctic meeting held in Stockholm on 9 – 11 September 1957, it was decided that there was need for further international organisation of scientific activity in Antarctica, and that a committee should be set up for this purpose.

The SCAR Fellowship Programme was initiated in 2002. The aim was to encourage the active involvement of early-career researchers in Antarctic scientific research and build new connections and further strengthen international capacity and cooperation in Antarctic research. Since the initiation of the programme, more than 80 SCAR Fellowships have been awarded.

The SCAR Fellowship Programme is designed to encourage the active involvement of early-career researchers in furthering the understanding of Antarctica. The Fellowships enable early-career researchers to join a project team from another country, opening up new opportunities and often creating partnerships that last many years and over many Antarctic research seasons.

Some flexibility was introduced during the pandemic and this will continue. Applicants are able to propose partly or entirely remote Fellowships and, where issues later develop around travel or planned activities, SCAR will work with awardees to enable their fellowships to go ahead. In 2023, as in 2022, additional funding is being provided by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation through the Polar Initiative. They will therefore be awarding 4-5 Fellowships this year.

Benefits of SCAR Fellowship Programme

  • Up to USD $15,000 per award;
  • Home institute to bear in-home country costs (e.g. visa costs, domestic travel);
  • Host institute to waive bench fees, if any.

Requirements for SCAR Fellowship Programme Qualification

  • Open to current PhD researcher or within 5 years of finishing PhD;

  • Should contribute to the objectives of one or more of SCAR’s science groups, including the Humanities and Social Sciences group, and/or the Scientific Research Programmes.

How to Apply

Interested Persons should CLICK HERE to apply

 Before you begin your Online Fellowship Application, you must have the three main documents ready to upload (preferably as PDF files):

SCAR Visiting Scholar Scheme for Developing Countries 2023

June 29, 2023 by Cyril O Leave a Comment

SCAR Visiting Scholar Scheme for Developing Countries 2023. Applications are now open for the SCAR visiting Scholarship scheme for developing countries around the world. See how to apply below and the requirements.

About SCAR (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research)

The plans for the IGY, the International Geophysical Year, 1957-58, included a major Antarctic component. At the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU) Antarctic meeting held in Stockholm on 9 – 11 September 1957, it was decided that there was need for further international organisation of scientific activity in Antarctica, and that a committee should be set up for this purpose.

SCAR Scholarship Scheme

SCAR Visiting Scholarships are for mid- to late-career stage scientists and academics (at least 5 years after completing their PhD) who are involved in Antarctic research, providing the opportunity for them to undertake a short-term visit (1 to 4 weeks) to an institute(s) in another SCAR member country, to provide training and mentoring.

The core purpose of the Scheme is to build capacity in countries with smaller or less-developed Antarctic research programmes. Visits can be either to smaller and developing programmes or from smaller and developing programmes, so the capacity building process can be proposed either way. The scheme is for any scientists and academics whose research contributes to SCAR’s objectives, as embodied in the Science Groups and Scientific Research Programmes.

Benefits of SCAR Visiting Scholar Scheme

  • The Visiting Scholar Scheme provides individual awards of up to USD $5,000.

Check also – Zolve Global Scholarship Program 2023/2024 – Apply Here

Requirements for SCAR Visiting Scholar Scheme Qualification

  • Open to scientists and academics (more than five years after completing their PhD) whose research contributes to SCAR’s objectives, as embodied in the Science Groups, Scientific Research Programmes, and Humanities and Social Sciences.
  • The host institute must be in or operated by one of the SCAR Member countries and must be a country different from that of the candidate’s current position and the candidate’s origin (although the latter may be waived at the discretion of the Selection Committee). Visiting Scholarships are awarded purely by competitive selection.

Selection Process

Evaluation Criteria

The review panel will comprise representatives from the SCAR Capacity Building, Education and Training (CBET) Committee, the SCAR Executive Committee, and one or more of the Officers of the SCAR Science Groups or their Alternates. The review panel will evaluate all proposals on their potential to build capacity in countries with smaller or less-developed Antarctic research programmes. This evaluation will also take into consideration factors such as:

  • the research excellence the visit will provide;
  • how the visit ‘fits’ with SCAR’s place in science and research, and with its research directions;
  • how far links have already been established with the proposed host institute;
  • career stage of the candidate.

In order to apply, scientists and academics are required to first contact and liaise with the appropriate host, to secure the support of an organization or institute undertaking Antarctic research that would benefit from the visit. The complete application package consists of:

  • Proposal Document – A one-page description of the proposed visit detailing the intended capacity-building activities.
  • The applicant’s CV.
  • Online Application – to be completed by the applicant.
    Note: the applicant must have both the Proposal Document and CV ready to upload before starting the application process, and optionally a portrait image to be used when announcing the successful applicants.

About The University of Birmingham

The University of Birmingham (informally Birmingham University) is a public research university located in Edgbaston, Birmingham, United Kingdom. It got its royal charter in 1900 as a successor to Queen’s College, Birmingham (founded in 1828 as the Birmingham School of Medicine and Surgery) and Mason Science College (established in 1875 by Sir Josiah Mason), making it the first English civic or ‘red brick’ university to receive its own royal charter.

We are offering a generous Masters scholarship for international students, to ensure that concerns about finance do not present a barrier to students from a selection of countries considering study at the University.

With a value of £2,000 per scholarship, this award is available to all international students from a selection of countries who are seeking to study a taught Masters degree at Birmingham in the 2023/24 academic year. Eligible scholars who successfully meet the criteria will have this amount deducted from their total tuition fees owed.
