About Victoria University of Wellington

Victoria University of Wellington (M?ori: Te Herenga Waka) is a university in Wellington, New Zealand. It was established in 1897 by Act of Parliament, and was a constituent college of the University of New Zealand. The university is well known for its programmes in law, the humanities, and some scientific disciplines, and offers a broad range of other courses. Entry to all courses at first year is open, and entry to second year in some programmes (e.g. law, criminology, creative writing, architecture, engineering) is restricted.

Victoria University of Wellington Kahurangi Scholarship

The Wellington Kahurangi Scholarship recognises exceptional Maori students. We encourage applicants who have achieved academically and within the areas of culture, community involvement, and leadership.

The scholarship package includes full accommodation costs* for the first year on the Marino Floor in Joan Stevens hall of residence, where tikanga Mori (Mori cultural practices) and te reo Mori (Mori language) are part of everyday life. There is dedicated pastoral support, plus $5,000 towards tuition fees in the second and third years of study. For students who are not in a hall, a $15,000 fees contribution can be taken evenly across three years.

Requirements for Kahurangi Scholarship

  • Applicants must be of Maori descent, have a strong connection to their whakapapa and be registered with at least one iwi.
  • Applicants are expected to have their NCEA Level 2 Certificate endorsed with Merit from Year 12 (or an equivalent level of achievement in an alternate qualification).
  • Applicants must be intending to enrol full-time in the year following application in their first undergraduate degree at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.
  • Applicants must be in Year 13 or have completed Year 13 in the year prior and be taking a gap year to be eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Selection Process

Scholarships will be awarded based on academic achievement as well as the areas of culture, community involvement, and leadership.

Selection will be made by the Te Herenga Waka — Victoria University of Wellington Undergraduate Scholarship Committee.

Documents Required for Application

  • A one-page personal statement outlining any attributes of leadership and/or commitment to your community.
  • A reference from your school (to be requested via the online application).
  • A reference from a Kaumatua such as an iwi representative of a Runanga or Trust Board that can endorse your whakapapa (to be requested via the online application).

A completed online application must be submitted by 4.30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.
