DARMASISWA is a scholarship program offered to all foreign students from countries which have diplomatic relationship with Indonesia to study Bahasa, art and culture. Participants can choose one of selected universities located in different cities in Indonesia. This program is organized by the Ministry of Education and Culture (MoEC) in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA).

The DARMASISWA program was started in 1974 as part of ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) initiative, admitting only students from ASEAN. However, in 1976 this program was extended to include students from other countries such as Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, and USA. In early 90’s, this program was extended further to include all countries which have diplomatic relationship with Indonesia. Until date, the number of countries participating in this program is more than 135 countries.

The main purpose of the DARMASISWA program is to promote and increase the interest in the language and culture of Indonesia among the youth of other countries. It has also been designed to provide stronger cultural links and understanding among participating countries. The Interest of international students to participate in this program keep increasing year by year.

Requirements And Eligibility

Foreign nationals.
Completed secondary education or its equivalent.
Minimum age 18 years, with a maximum age limit of 32 years (special for this year).
Able to communicate in English (Proven by English Language Proficiency Certificate: TOEFL/TOEIC/IELTS or OTHER CERTIFICATE if applicable).
In good health as proven by a Medical Certificate.
Have basic knowledge of the applied field.
Have strong interest in learning the applied field.
Not registered as Darmasiswa’s Alumni.
Not registered as KNB’s Alumni.
Not currently studying in Indonesia.
Not currently working in Indonesia.

Benefits of the Scholarship

Monthly living allowance in the amount of IDR 4,700,000.
One-off book allowance in the amount of IDR 2,000,000.
One-off settlement allowance in the amount of IDR 4,700,000.
Accommodation and local transportation during the Orientation Program.
Legal stay permit from the Government of Indonesia.
Assistance from host universities in finding a house/room of which the rent is included in the living allowance.
Receive local health insurance.

Essay about applicant’s purpose of study (in English or Bahasa Indonesia maximum 500 words).
A full body video that shows the applicant explaining her/his motivation to join the program and what she/he will contribute as an ambassador of Indonesian culture after graduating (video must not exceed 2 minutes duration and can be in English or Bahasa Indonesia).
